Expert care at your baby’s first big check-up
Why the 6-Week Baby Check Matters
Your baby’s 6-week check-up is an important step during this early stage of life, and a moment of reassurance for you as a parent. Our gentle GPs will carefully examine your baby from head to toe, checking for common health concerns and assessing their growth and development.
It’s also your opportunity to ask questions about feeding, sleeping, bonding, or behaviour. This 6-week check is just as much about supporting you as it is about supporting your baby.
Our trusted, experienced team provides same-day appointments and continuous care you can rely on, guided by NSW Health recommendations.
What to Expect at Your Baby’s 6-Week Check
Your 6-week baby check is a routine health assessment where your GP looks at your baby’s overall health, answers your questions, and makes sure you feel supported in these early weeks.
Growth and Development
Your baby’s measurements are recorded on a growth chart, while their eyes, hips, heart, skin, reflexes, and early responses are carefully checked.
Feeding and Settling
You can discuss feeding patterns, and settling, with gentle guidance that respects your baby’s needs and your choices.
Immunisations
At 6 weeks, your baby is due for their first routine vaccinations. These protect against serious illnesses and help build your baby’s immune system.
Referral Support
If there are concerns about your baby’s health or development, we can arrange timely referrals to paediatricians or allied health specialists.
Safe Sleeping & Parenting Guidance
Your trusted GP will discuss safe sleep routines and newborn care, offering practical advice to build your confidence as a parent.
Your Well-being
This check-up also supports your postnatal recovery. Your GP will give you the chance to talk about physical healing, mood, and emotional health.

FAQs: 6-Week Baby Checks at Mona Vale Doctors
-
A 6-week baby check is a routine appointment where your GP thoroughly reviews your baby’s growth, development, and overall health. It’s important because it helps pick up any early concerns, supports healthy development, and offers reassurance for you as new parents. It includes your baby’s first vaccinations, which give them vital protection against serious illnesses. Your caring GP will also check on your postnatal recovery and well-being too.
-
For your baby’s 6-week check-up, please bring their Medicare card (if available) and their Blue Book. This allows your GP to note growth measurements, immunisations, and important milestones. It’s also helpful to bring a list of questions or concerns you’d like to discuss.
-
Yes, your baby will usually receive their first round of routine vaccinations at the 6-week visit. These protect against diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, polio, haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), rotavirus, and pneumococcal disease. These vaccines can be given from 6 weeks of age, are part of the NSW Immunisation Schedule and are free under the National Immunisation Program.
-
Yes, the 6-week check is just as much about you as it is your baby. Your GP will ask about your recovery after birth, including physical healing, sleep, and emotional well-being. It’s also a safe space to talk about mood, support systems, or any concerns you may have. Our goal is to ensure both you and your baby feel supported in these early weeks.
-
If you have any worries before the 6-week check, you don’t need to wait. You can book an appointment at any time to talk through concerns about your baby’s feeding, sleep, growth, or general health. Same-day appointments are available for unwell babies, and your GP can guide you if urgent care is needed. If you’re unsure, reach out to 02 9997 4266. In emergencies, dial 000 immediately.
