Mental Health Support in Mona Vale
Compassionate, Confidential GP Care
Supporting Your Mental Wellbeing
Mental health is an important part of your overall health, just like your physical wellbeing. When things feel heavy, stressful, or overwhelming, it’s okay to ask for help.
At Mona Vale Doctors, we offer a safe and confidential space where you can talk openly about how you’re feeling. Our GPs listen without judgement and take the time to understand what’s going on in your life.
For many people, a GP is the first place to turn for mental health support. We can help you understand your symptoms, talk through treatment options, and connect you with additional support if needed.
You don’t have to face mental health challenges on your own. Support is available, and we’re here to help.
Mental Health Conditions We Support
Many people aren’t sure whether what they’re experiencing is something they should talk to a doctor about. Our GPs provide a calm, supportive space to discuss how you’re feeling, understand what may be contributing, and explore practical ways to help.
We support patients across Mona Vale and the Northern Beaches with:
Anxiety and panic symptoms
If constant worry, racing thoughts, or panic episodes are affecting daily life, your GP can help you understand what’s happening and discuss strategies or treatment options.
Relationship or family challenges
Life events, relationship changes, or family conflict can affect emotional wellbeing. Your GP can provide a supportive place to talk and help connect you with appropriate support.
Grief and loss
Losing someone important can bring a wide range of emotions. Your GP can provide support during bereavement and help you access additional care if needed.
Men’s mental health
Men sometimes find it harder to seek support for emotional concerns. Our GPs provide a respectful and confidential environment where men can talk openly about their mental health.
Depression and low mood
When motivation, energy, or enjoyment in daily life feels reduced, your GP can gently assess symptoms and guide you through supportive care options.
Medication review and management
If medication is part of your care, your GP can explain options, monitor progress, and review treatment to ensure it remains appropriate for your needs.
Sleep concerns linked to mental health
Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking feeling unrested can sometimes be linked to stress, anxiety, or mood changes. Your GP can help explore possible causes and solutions.
Adjustment difficulties and life transitions
Major changes such as moving, career changes, parenthood, or retirement can affect mental health. Your GP can help you navigate these transitions with practical advice and support.
Support for teenagers and young adults
Young people face unique pressures from school, work, social life, and life transitions. Our GPs offer a safe and understanding space for teenagers and young adults to seek support.
Work-related stress
Pressure at work can sometimes lead to anxiety, fatigue, or emotional strain. We provide support and guidance for managing workplace stress and maintaining wellbeing.
If alcohol or substances are affecting your wellbeing, your GP can offer confidential support and discuss safe, practical steps toward change.
Stress and burnout
Ongoing stress from work, study, or personal responsibilities can affect both mental and physical health. Your GP can help you recognise signs of burnout and discuss practical ways to regain balance.
Substance misuse (alcohol or other substances)
Women’s mental health
Hormonal changes, life stages, and personal stressors can affect women’s mental wellbeing. Your GP can help assess symptoms and guide appropriate support.
Mental Health Care Plans (Medicare-rebated psychology referrals)
Your GP can create a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, which may provide access to Medicare-rebated sessions with a psychologist.
Referrals to psychologists and psychiatrists
When additional support is helpful, we can connect you with trusted psychologists, psychiatrists, and other specialists within our local referral network.
GP Mental Health Treatment Plans
A GP Mental Health Treatment Plan (often called a Mental Health Care Plan) is a structured way for your GP to support your mental health and connect you with additional care when needed.
During your appointment, your GP will take time to understand what you’re experiencing, ask about symptoms, and discuss how your mental health is affecting daily life. Together, you’ll talk about your goals, possible treatment options, and what support might be most helpful.
If appropriate, your GP can create a personalised treatment plan that may include referrals to a psychologist or other mental health professional. Under Medicare’s Better Access initiative, eligible patients can receive Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual psychological therapy sessions each calendar year, helping make professional mental health support more accessible.
Your plan may also include follow-up appointments with your GP to review progress, adjust treatments, and ensure you’re receiving the right care over time.
Mental health treatment plans are designed to be flexible and collaborative. They provide a clear pathway for support while allowing your care to adapt as your needs change.
If you’re unsure whether a Mental Health Care Plan is right for you, your GP can talk you through the process and help you decide on the most appropriate next step.

A Supportive and Practical Approach
At Mona Vale Doctors, we understand that talking about mental health can feel difficult. Our GPs take a calm, respectful approach, creating a space where you feel comfortable speaking openly about what you’re experiencing.
We begin by listening carefully to your concerns and understanding how your mental health is affecting your day-to-day life. From there, your GP can work with you to develop a personalised plan that may include lifestyle strategies, psychological support, or medication when appropriate.
Our care is grounded in evidence-based treatment, meaning recommendations are based on established medical guidelines and current clinical knowledge. This helps ensure you receive support that is both safe and effective.
Just as importantly, mental health care often benefits from continuity and trust over time. Seeing the same GP allows us to understand your health history, monitor your progress, and adjust care as your needs change.
