Men’s Health Check in Mona Vale

Comprehensive Men’s Health Assessments

Many men and people with male health needs find it easier to push through symptoms or handle health concerns on their own rather than ask for support. As a result, it’s common to delay seeing a doctor until a problem becomes harder to ignore.

The challenge is that many health conditions develop gradually and may not cause obvious symptoms at first. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that almost half of Australian men live with at least one chronic condition, highlighting the importance of regular health checks.

At Mona Vale Doctors, we aim to make men’s health checks straightforward, supportive, and practical. Your GP will take the time to understand your health, lifestyle, and any concerns you may have.

A men’s health check helps identify potential risks early and gives you clear guidance on how to stay healthy in the long term. A regular health check helps you stay active, maintain your independence, and address small health issues before they become bigger problems. It’s a practical way to protect your long-term wellbeing and stay healthy for the people who matter most.

What We Assess

A men’s health check on the Northern Beaches includes a comprehensive review of your overall health, lifestyle habits, and risk factors. Your GP will take the time to understand your health, discuss any concerns you may have, and recommend appropriate screening tests where needed.

Lifestyle review

Your GP will talk with you about everyday habits such as nutrition, physical activity, alcohol intake, and smoking or vaping. These conversations are practical and judgement-free, focusing on small changes that can support your long-term health.

Weight and metabolic health

Your GP will measure your weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference to help identify risks linked to metabolic syndrome, diabetes and heart disease.

Sleep and energy levels

If you often feel tired or run down, your GP may ask about your sleep patterns. Poor sleep and symptoms such as loud snoring or daytime fatigue can sometimes suggest conditions like sleep apnoea.

Cardiovascular health

Your GP will check your blood pressure and assess your overall heart health. This may include reviewing your cholesterol levels and calculating your cardiovascular risk, which estimates your chance of developing heart disease or stroke over time. If needed, your GP may also discuss further tests, such as a CT coronary calcium score.

Sexual and reproductive health

A men’s health check also provides a safe space to talk about concerns such as erectile dysfunction, changes in libido, or other sexual health issues. These conversations are confidential and handled with care.

Mental wellbeing

Your GP may also check in about stress, mood, and mental health. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, around 43% of Australian men experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives. Mental wellbeing is an important part of overall health.

Diabetes screening

Simple blood tests can check your blood sugar levels and detect early signs of diabetes or prediabetes.

After reviewing your results, your GP will work with you to create a personalised plan. This may include screening recommendations, lifestyle guidance, and follow-up care to help you stay healthy over time.

Cancer screening

Your GP will assess your eligibility for bowel cancer screening, discuss prostate health, and check your skin for new or changing moles or spots. Regular skin checks are particularly important in Australia, where melanoma is one of the most common cancers (Cancer Australia).

Individualised preventative health plan

Preventative, Practical and Ongoing

Our GPs take the time to explain your results in plain language and talk with you about your health goals. They offer simple, practical advice that fits into everyday life. This might include improving sleep, managing stress, or making small lifestyle changes that support your long-term health.

A men’s health check at Mona Vale Doctors is part of an ongoing approach to looking after your health. These checks can identify risk factors early, often before symptoms appear. This is important because many health problems are linked to lifestyle habits. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, about 40% of disease burden among Australian men is linked to preventable risk factors, such as smoking, poor diet and physical inactivity.

Regular follow-ups allow your GP to monitor changes, manage risks early, and support your health as your needs evolve. Our goal is to help you stay well, stay active, and feel confident about your health for the years ahead.

FAQs

  • Most men benefit from a health check every 1–2 years. How often you should attend can depend on your age, medical history and personal risk factors. Our GPs follow evidence-based guidelines from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and can recommend how often you should attend based on your individual health needs.

  • Many men begin regular health checks in their 40s, when the risk of conditions such as heart disease and diabetes increases. Earlier checks may be recommended if you have symptoms or a family history of certain conditions.

  • Yes, your GP can discuss prostate health during your appointment. In Australia, routine prostate screening is not recommended for all men, but many men choose to discuss testing with their doctor from around age 50, or earlier if they have a family history of prostate cancer. If appropriate, this may include a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test, which measures a protein produced by the prostate gland. Your GP will recommend testing based on your age, symptoms, and personal risk factors.

  • The blood tests included in your health check depend on your age, symptoms and personal risk factors. Common tests may check cholesterol levels, blood sugar (for diabetes), kidney function and liver health. Your GP may also recommend additional tests if needed to better assess your overall health.

  • Some blood tests, such as cholesterol or blood sugar tests, may require fasting for 8–12 hours beforehand. When you book your appointment, our team will let you know if fasting is needed so you can prepare.

  • Mona Vale Doctors is a private billing practice, so most consultations involve an out-of-pocket fee after the Medicare rebate. Reduced fees may be available for pensioners. There is no out-of-pocket fee for preschool children or DVA Gold Card holders, at the doctor’s discretion.
